Community Learning Center – Jaitpur

In the Jaitpur area of Delhi, many families live near the Yamuna river floodplain where floods occur every few years. Because of this, permanent construction is not allowed and most homes are built using temporary and environmentally friendly materials.

Around 150–200 families live in this community and there are approximately 300–350 children. Most families depend on daily wage work or informal employment for their livelihood.

Since homes are small and shared by many family members, children often do not have a quiet place to study.

Understanding this need, the Dhuri team began conversations with parents and community members. Several meetings were held to discuss education and learning opportunities for children.

During this process, the idea of creating a small community learning center emerged — a place where children could gather, study, and participate in learning activities together.

In the early stages, small activities such as drawing sessions, reading activities, and group discussions were organized with children. These activities helped build trust and excitement within the community.

Since permanent construction is not possible in this area, the learning center was built using environmentally friendly materials similar to the houses in the community. Bamboo poles, plastic pallets, and sheets were used to create the structure.

Plastic pallets were used as the base floor, cow mats were placed on top for insulation, and floor mats were spread so that children could sit comfortably.

After weeks of work and community support, the learning center was officially inaugurated on 21 February.

From 23 February, children from Nursery to Class 12 started coming to the center for study support and learning activities.
